The blog
has not been updated since December 2018, we
apologize for this lack of assiduity, but it does not mean that our beautiful
project Sky Katitawa was off during all this time, it is all the contrary. A
lot of motivated and amazing volunteers have volunteered with us like
Kevin, Pedro and Loic that made amazing videos to explain more in details the
project and a typical day of a volunteer in Salasaka. Links of the videos below
December
was the month of a really important event, La Fiesta del Capitan to remember two
historical events, the conquest of the Spanish in America and the involvement
of the community of Salasaka in the Revolution led by Eloy Alfaro. But you will
know more about this party when you visit the museum of the people of Salasaka
where the volunteers sometimes go to help to promote the culture of the
community of Salasaka.
It goes
without saying that December is the month of Christmas, a hard time for the
volunteers as they are far from their families. But don´t worry, to cheer them
up, some events take place in Salasaka. This year,
the volunteers were invited by the president of the community of Patuloma (the
community we live and work with) to have a party just a few days before Christmas. A lot of funny games
involved with gifts to win. Tomato game, egg game, musical chairs, piñata,
traditional musics and dances…
Right after Christmas, we enjoyed one week of vacations chilling and visiting Ecuador before celebrating 2019. We must say that spending New Year in Ecuador is an unusual and amazing experience because of the tradition of the Año Viejo and Viudas.
For Año Viejo the Ecuadorians make puppets of famous personalities or characters from
cartoons with any material they can find like old clothes, cardboard, and paper filled
with shaving, hay or sawdust… In order to get away bad luck or energies of the year that
has just ended, they burn the puppet during New Year’s Eve.
The Viudas
(widows in English) is a funny tradition that only exists in Ecuador, men have
to dress as a woman and stop the cars in order to collect money. And everything
is allowed, dances, seduction and more... Some volunteers took part in this
event and managed to collect quite a lot of dollars for the Project Sky
Katitawa !!!
In February
there is la Fiesta del Caporal, symbol of the indigenous resistance during the
Spanish conquest. Once again you will receive more information about this event
in the museum of Salasaka.
February is also the month of carnivals in South America,
the one in Ambato is really famous because
the floats are made with flowers and fruits.
Nice
